2002. Summer before senior year of high school, Alex takes a trip with his parents to their home country of Peru. A week into the trip, his mother Sofia disappears. Alex and his father Gideon – a supercilious, failed academic – decide to go after her. They team up with Gideon’s childhood friend and his whip-smart teenage daughter, tracking her up the coast, through the mountains, into the Peruvian Amazon. Along the way, Alex uncovers a web of family secrets, comes to understand where he’s from, and discovers the power of living in the moment.
